Nikon D7100 in 2025?

Sometimes, taking a step back can propel you forward. That’s exactly how I feel about revisiting the Nikon D7100 in 2025. This camera, while no longer cutting-edge, holds a special place in my creative journey. It’s been both a nostalgic return to my roots and a refreshing challenge amidst today’s mirrorless-dominated landscape.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

When I first started photography, my journey began with a Nikon entry-level DSLR. Whether it was a D3200 or another early model, I used it for everything: street photography, travel, filmmaking—you name it. That camera was my introduction to the world of visual storytelling. Eventually, I upgraded to the Sony A6600, which has been a powerhouse for photography and videography. However, when I received the Nikon D7100 as a gift, I couldn’t resist the chance to revisit the DSLR era.

The Nikon D7100 in a Mirrorless World

In 2024, where mirrorless cameras reign supreme, working with a DSLR feels like stepping into a time machine. Mirrorless cameras like my Sony A6600 boast incredible autofocus, exceptional low-light performance, and compact designs. In comparison, using the D7100 has reminded me of the technical hurdles photographers once faced, including:

Manual Adjustments: The lack of advanced autofocus means honing in on precision.

Low-Light Challenges: Shooting in dim settings requires more planning and patience.

Extra Effort for Results: Capturing the same quality of images with the D7100 often takes double the effort compared to modern cameras.

While these limitations can be frustrating, they also push me to refine my skills and appreciate the craft.

Rediscovering Creativity

One surprising advantage of using the D7100 has been the creative spark it reignited. The 18-105mm kit lens has opened up new possibilities for composition, allowing me to zoom in and capture details I might have overlooked with other setups. There’s a certain joy in working with these constraints—it forces you to slow down and think deliberately about each shot.

Lessons Learned

Revisiting older gear like the Nikon D7100 isn’t just a technical challenge; it’s a reminder of where I started and how far I’ve come. It’s easy to get caught up in the latest tech and forget that artistry doesn’t depend on equipment alone. Sometimes, the constraints of older gear teach you more about photography than any new feature ever could.

The Nikon D7100 may not be cutting-edge, but it’s still a capable tool in the right hands. For me, it’s been more than just a camera—it’s been a lesson in creativity, patience, and the joy of photography. If you have an old piece of gear collecting dust, I encourage you to dust it off and take it out for a spin. You might just rediscover the passion that first got you behind the lens.

Have you ever revisited old photography gear? What challenges and joys did you experience? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your stories. And if you’re thinking about giving your old camera another shot, remember: it’s not about the gear; it’s about the vision.
