Reflecting on My Creative Journey: The Evolution of "Nomadic Expression"
Welcome to another blog post, where I want to share some thoughts on my creative process and the evolution of a project that's close to my heart— Nomadic Expression.
Way back, I took a photograph, one of many that eventually inspired me to create a digital exhibit through my website. I named it Nomadic Expression, a fitting title because at the time, I was truly living a nomadic life, quite literally out of my car, capturing moments and scenes from the road.
This project started as a digital exhibit, a collection of images that I put together and shared once. I never really published it beyond that. It was a digital album, a snapshot of a journey that I am now revisiting. The reason? I want to bring these photographs into the physical world, into a book—an actual album. I don't want to keep creating new images and feel like I'm leaving the old ones behind. Instead, I want to compile the old into something cohesive and meaningful, something that tells the story of that time in my life.
In creating this, I named a folder "Photo Books" and started filling it with potential projects: Nomadic Expression, Street I See, In This Life, and What the...?. Four albums, four different visions, all vying for attention. I found myself getting way too in my head about it, overthinking the structure, the content, and the focus. Nomadic Expression felt especially scattered—street photography, car photography, landscapes, abstracts—it was all over the place, a culmination of years of work thrown together.
But maybe that's okay. Maybe Nomadic Expression isn't supposed to be narrowly focused. Maybe it’s meant to be an introduction, a broad overview of who I am as an artist, capturing the essence of my journey through photography. It's an entry point, a way for people to get to know my work in all its varied forms.
As I went through the images again, I realized there weren't as many as I thought, but there were still hundreds of photographs to sift through—street scenes, landscapes, cars, and abstracts. I initially wanted to separate them into different albums, each with a specific focus, but that idea felt limiting. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this first album should reflect the diversity of my work.
So, I’ve decided to finalize Nomadic Expression as it is. It will be a comprehensive album, a collection of images that introduce my style and perspective. It won't be a single-themed book; instead, it will be a collage of moments, ideas, and experiences that defined my early years as a photographer.
This realization brought me a lot of clarity. I had been paralyzed by indecision, caught up in wanting everything to be perfect. But sometimes, perfection isn't the goal. Authenticity is. And this album, in all its variety, is authentic to my journey.
I’m excited to filter through the final images, curate them with intention, and bring this project to life in a way that feels true to its origins. I already have about 104 images set aside, but I’m going to go through them one last time, ensure they represent the spirit of the album, and then share them with the world.
This process has been a mix of frustration and enlightenment. It took stepping away and coming back with fresh eyes to see the project for what it truly is—a reflection of my creative journey.
I’m excited to share Nomadic Expression with you all, and I’m grateful for your patience as I’ve worked through this process. This fall, as I celebrate my birthday and the changing seasons, I’ll be releasing this album, and I hope it resonates with you as much as it has with me.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Stay tuned for more updates, and I can’t wait to share the finished project with you soon.
